"shopping malls often desegregate first" pg 237 sundown towns
for example in dearborn when Black people were prevented from buying property there, desegregation started in the malls.

fairlane mall in former sundown town dearborn has had a youth curfew in place since 2004.
everyone under 18 has to be out of that mall by 5p unless they have a guardian over 21 with them.
we lived and live this!
imo the curfew is linked to dearborn’s sundown history, down to the hour & manner of enforcement (6p during sundown times, 5p current day)
in many sundown towns there was an alarm/whistle/bell, the curfew at fairlane is an announcement over the speaker
looking up things about fairlane i learned that a Black man was killed inside the mall in 2000
he was suffocated by a security guard bc his 11 year old stepdaughter allegedly “shoplifted” from lord & taylor.
his name was Frederick Finley & at the time there were large protests
eventually the charges were dropped against the killer security guard
& in 2004 kym worthy said
"it is in the best interest of justice that the case be dismissed" source
4 years after the killing, a youth curfew was implemented
no other mall in michigan has a youth curfew besides the one closest to detroit
the city has no mall/lift the youth curfew/it is a sundown policy

now let me inform u i recently went to the register of deeds office!
i originally did this 2 c what ethnicity of white were the ppl who originally bought my house
(kd was like oh, u want to know what type of ghosts u have. lmao YES)
about that haunted government office
in greektown, fishbones building 7th floor
they do charge u for every piece of paper they print, my total was $18
one poster on wall read “not every deed is a good deed” 😭
topic of convo in the waiting area: the lions
so here u go!
a page from the original deed contract for the house i live in
so even tho detroit as a whole city was not a sundown town, this is some of the exact language sundown towns used and is an example of red-lining.
it is mind blowing to me to have this doc!
this page has the names of the original house/lot purchasers
wuest to me seems german, correct me if i’m wrong!!
NOW LET ME TIE THIS ALL TOGETHER

the renaissance center is another place i used to get kicked out of as a yoot
i want to know why do they want to tear it down so bad!!
it is objectively the most iconic buildings of our skyline
dan gilbert should be court martialed from buying any more of detroit
don’t tear down! demolition duggan is hereby out!
and instead, if the kids aren’t allowed in the mall can we get a tiny 420 friendly movie theatre back abeg??
the rencen 4 had u guessed it
4 screens/680 seats/open from 1978-2015
now that cinema det finally closed last year
i don’t need to tell u but we have one (1) movie theatre left!
& i hate to even count it bc it’s on the suburban border

detroit peaked at 117 movie theatres 😱
the recipes have gone to hell
“117 neighborhood movie theaters…existed in the city in the 1940s” source
it’s 80 years after the 40s and we’re dying heah!
can i get a bare minimum
ennywhey thank u for giving this your eye, i needed that!!
4.
don’t forget to fill out this
& have a great rest of week🎈
